Until Asian Games in the year 1982 which was held in New Delhi, Indian Television Industry was Infant, telecast was in Black and white format and that was also for only some hours, but with Asian Games telecast start in Colour in India, not all the program but only few program in colour because there was necessity to upgrade there lot of machinery plus necessity to include technical experts person and it was possible by huge investment, and Doordarshan had lot of doordarshan Kendras or relay centre across India which was covering good percent of India, telecast of programme was in Terrestrial mode mean one can watch the program after erecting antenna at the top of there building and they were covering respective states for few hours throughout day and still the programme made for Television ( Doordarshan ) had not much attraction among viewers to watch the program .
In the year 1990 when gulf war fought it was telecast by CNN and people watch it and get the clear view from there houses’ through Cable, and it give a new direction for business house to jump in a sector which was going to be great hit in coming time and its name was Cable Television. In the beginning when Cable was new it was watched through dish ( having dish install in the premises of subscriber ) and cable ( which was seen through cable and its set up and control by local based franchisee ),and in the beginning it was able to telecast only 20 to 25 channels and to increase its number he has to upgrade its system, but slowly slowly when channel numbers keep on increasing they have to switch over from analogue to digital mode and its signal at subscriber end was as clear as of crystal both sound and picture wise. In India right now famous and well known three groups are existing whose different channels like and watch by more then eighty percent of cable subscriber and they are Star Group India, Sony Group and Zee Group as broadcaster and there all the channels control more then 75 % of business, but as the time passing on and they start looking for other point to earn revenue other then advertisement and some share from the total number of subscriber of cable service provider and they found very much effective to make there most demanded channel paid for whom to show cable service provider has to give additional money to its broadcaster. Then broadcaster also jump in the field and start giving cable service at city level and it heated the competition but it make customer king because start getting option to have connection of such provider who give good service at less price. Even some small level cable service provider merge also because getting all the three groups major channels making there input cost out from there hands.
Then in the month of July 2006 DTH (Direct to Home) service allowed, which means that after installing dish at the roof top of the house and through set up box subscriber can watch each and every channel with great quality of sound and picture with channels as per his choice bouquet and broadcaster has option of different slabs, but the biggest disadvantage of DTH against Cable is that with cable every TV set are independent and subscriber can watch his choice of channel but with DTH only one channel can be viewed which make it very costly or almost double to watch two TV. In the beginning there were three broadcaster but now there are more players are in the DTH circle they are

2. Tata Sky Tata n Sky Group of UK
3. DD Direct Doordarshan
4. Sun Direct Sun Direct uses the latest MPEG-4 based technology
to increase broadcast capacity.
5. Big Digital TV Reliance Communications
6. Airtel Digital TV Bharti Group
7. Videocon DTH Soon going to be launched
DTH service provider which enter in the field use MPEG 2 technology while all the latest entrance are using MPEG 4 which give advantage to the player to broadcast high quality video content along with more channels in the same bandwidth.
With so much competition broadcaster can manipulate and misuse its channel demand, but to check it government has already some years back put this industry under the eyes of TRAI as regulator.
From single channel in the eighties to two thousand eight countless channel are available with very small monthly fees and all category channel like news, sports ,movies, cartoon , music and films etc. etc. and its boom has hit some trade also like theater n movies, but in the era of competition Customer is king which ever player give best service with less price will be winner as far business is concern.
