Strike !

Strike is a effective tool which often used by Government employees or Industrial workers to bend employer to accept their demands, in the beginning employees pass on their demands to the authority, if accepted then okay otherwise they take second step by shedding their works for stipulated time and if worker still unable to convince employer then they convert the time of not doing works in days and in the last they totally left work until their demands not met, it leads to dialogue between management and striking workers, both parties comes to a solution which accepted to both parties but during the period of strike, production is major loser because working operation comes to halt and in the end when works started again then it is cover by workers doing over time. Although private and small industries management try that their workers not to make a Union as they know later on it can become big problem for them to meet the demand of workers which some times genuine but often bias towards workers and at the same time it is not by law that employer can stop employees to make union but he succeed only to stop them by force. Workers find right time to go on strike when their interest squeeze by employer at the time when works at its peak because they know that after the gap of few days ultimately management will bow considering the order book /work load they have to execute. Recently strike in private and government airlines by pilots is the biggest example that how strike word become a victorious weapon-
  • Jet Airways- In the first week of September almost 400 Pilots went on mass sick leave, it all begins when management sacked two pilots, in response to this 400 pilots went on mass sick leave (strike) resulting grounding the operation of the airlines on many routes for five days as after five days both parties comes to an agreement that sacked pilots will be reinstated, on the other hand the pilots will not challenge the review of registration of their union. The registration authority is the Registrar of Trade unions, India. A mass "sick leave" strike by pilots at India's second-largest airline, Jet Airways, ended after forcing the cancellation of flights for five days. Thousands of Jet customers had been forced to change their travel plans as more than 400 pilots -over half the pilot roster- reported sick in what the company called a "simulated strike" triggered by the sacking of two pilots for setting up a union. "The (sacked) pilots will be taken back into service and flight operations are set to begin after the pilots' rostering is done.
  • Air India- Taking the leaf out from the books of Jet Pilots in the last week of September this year Air India Pilots went on strike just protest against the cut in productivity linked incentives (PLI). Air India executive pilots had went on strike opposing the cuts in the productivity linked incentives. At least 180 pilots had reported sick to protest against the government move and refused to fly till their demands were met. The strike takes four days to call off when both sides Air India management and its pilots reached an agreement.
As per reports with the non operation by both Airlines during strike period on some routes both airlines bear the loss somewhere in between 350 million to 400 rupees which is destructive on financial front and it will certainly take some time to recover the losses as right now we are living in stiff competition era and monopoly days are over, but striking employees can opt innovative and constructive way of strike just like it was did by Japanese Shoe workers which happened long time ago ,is quite old incident of strike but it has very effective and zero percent money and productivity loss of strike at shoe factory by workers which goes like this –
  • In a shoe factory of Japan employees were not happy and satisfied with their salaries and packages’ just to convince management they went on strike but with different style they were keep on working in the factory without break but making only one foot shoe this way the product was manufacturing and stocks keep on piling but only one side which was wastage of material, power and worker productivity, when this process keep on continue for a week then management step ahead and talk to the employees and accepted there demand but at the same time asked who will bear useless production they produced, then workers leader respond it is not a loss and wastage but now worker will make other foot shoe thus will make a pair which is complete and salable in the market. Management impress and workers happy that their demand met and production was also not effected because of strike by workers so it was win win situation for everybody .
It shows that sometime when somebody hear with deaf ears then to attract other party which is not contemplating on to your demands its better to use the striking tool but with innovative and constructive way like Japanese shoe factory workers.
