At present there are 39 Jan Aushadhi outlets running in the country, Punjab leading with twenty, Rajasthan with eight, Haryana four, Delhi three, Uttaranchal two and Chandigarh and Andhra Pradesh one each. The first of such Jan Aushadhi outlets was opened in Punjab in November 2008. Initially programme was started in the states of Delhi, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh on an experimental basis. Plans were also underway to set up these stores in the districts of Ludhiana, Mohali, Jallandhar and Bhatinda.Other states like Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar and Assam are also reportedly coming forward to set up Jan Aushadhi outlets.The outlets will provide generic drugs to poor patients at over more then half the price of branded drugs, but the opening of the outlets depends on state governments' cooperation in allotting space in government hospitals for these outlets," Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Srikant Kumar Jena told the Lok Sabha.

To achieve goal, a campaign in the name of ‘Jan Aushadhi Campaign’ has been launched.The aim of this campaign is to make available quality medicines at affordable prices for all, especially the poor and the disadvantaged. Under this campaign, less priced quality unbranded generic medicines will be made available through Jan Aushadhi stores which inherently are less priced but are of same and equivalent quality, efficacy and safety as compared to branded generic medicines. The Jan Aushadhi Campaign has now been formalized as Generic Drug Scheme with the approval of the Planning Scheme. Under this Scheme, the State Government has to provide space in Government Hospital premises for the running of the outlets (JAS). Government hospitals, NGOs, Charitable Organisations and public societies like Red Cross Society, Rogi Kalyan Samiti typically constituted for the purpose can be operating agencies for the JAS. The operating agency for JAS is nominated on the basis of the recommendations of the State government.
Recently to open Jan Aushadhi stores in Himachal Pradesh, Health department and Central Government’s venture bureau of Pharma public sector undertaking deal on MoU to open twelve outlets in ten districts State. Rogi Kalyan Samiti’s representatives, head health secretary and VPPI’s executive director sign on the deal. Jan Aushadhi outlets will help common people to get medicines at less then half the price but to make successful Jan Aushadhi campaign, Doctor’s active and sincere participation is required.
